
A laptop fan is not a nuisance, it is a status report. When it runs flat out with nothing demanding open, something is keeping the processor busy or the machine cannot get rid of the heat it is making. Those are two different problems with two different fixes, and it is worth knowing which one you have before buying a cooling pad.
Heat also explains the slowness that usually comes with it. When the processor passes its temperature limit it deliberately slows itself down — thermal throttling — to avoid damage. So a hot laptop is a slow laptop, and fixing the heat fixes both complaints at once.
Start with the free checks. The physical cleaning at the end is effective but it is the last resort, not the first move.
You are in the right place if
- The fan runs at full speed even when you are only browsing
- The underside is too hot to keep on your lap
- Performance drops after ten or fifteen minutes of work
- It shuts down without warning during video calls or games
The 60-second fix
- Lift the back of the laptop about two centimetres so air can reach the intake underneath.
- Open Task Manager or Activity Monitor and close whatever is holding the processor above 30% while idle.
- Take it off the bed, sofa or cushion — fabric blocks the intake completely.
- Check for a pending graphics driver or system update; a known bad driver is a surprisingly common cause.
Step 1: decide whether it is software or airflow, in two minutes
This single check saves people from cleaning a laptop that did not need cleaning. Open your task manager and look at processor usage while doing nothing at all.
If the processor sits at 25% or more with no applications open, the fan is behaving correctly and you have a software problem. If the processor is near idle and the fan is still roaring, heat is not escaping and you have an airflow problem.
- Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Performance tab, then the Processes tab sorted by CPU.
- Mac: Activity Monitor → CPU tab, sorted by % CPU.
- Close your browser entirely as a test — if the fan calms within a minute, you have your answer.
- Note the name of anything above 10% while idle. That is your lead.
Step 2: airflow, and the mistake almost everyone makes
Nearly every laptop draws cool air from vents on the underside and pushes hot air out of the back or side. Put it on a bed, a sofa arm, a cushion or a thick blanket and you have sealed the intake. The fan then spins faster against a closed door, which is both loud and useless.
The second common mistake is putting the machine right against a wall or the back of a desk, so the hot exhaust has nowhere to go and is immediately drawn back in.
- Use it on a hard flat surface, or on a book, a tray, anything rigid if you are on the sofa.
- Raise the back edge by one to two centimetres. A simple stand or two bottle caps makes a measurable difference.
- Leave at least ten centimetres of clear space behind the exhaust vent.
- In hot weather, remember the room matters: a machine that is fine at 20°C will throttle in a 35°C room with no ventilation.
Step 3: the power setting that fixes more overheating than any accessory
Modern processors will happily push themselves to their thermal limit to gain a small amount of speed you will never notice while writing an email. Capping that boost is the single most effective software fix for a loud laptop, and on most machines you lose almost nothing for everyday work.
On Windows this is the power mode; on Mac, recent models have a low power mode that does much the same. Battery life improves at the same time, which is a pleasant side effect.
- Windows: Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → Balanced or Best power efficiency.
- Windows, deeper: in advanced power settings, set Maximum processor state to 95%. This usually cuts peak temperature substantially with a barely noticeable performance cost.
- Mac: System Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode, set to Always or On Battery.
- If you play games or edit video, make a second profile at full performance and switch to it only when you need it.
Step 4: dust, and the right way to deal with it
After two or three years in an average home, the heatsink fins on a laptop hold a felt-like mat of dust that air can barely pass through. This is real and it does make a substantial difference — ten degrees or more is common after a proper clean.
The catch is that blowing compressed air into a vent from outside often pushes the dust deeper, and spinning the fan with high-pressure air can damage its bearing. Doing it correctly matters more than doing it often.
- Shut the machine down fully and unplug it before anything else.
- Hold the fan blades still with a cocktail stick or a soft brush so they cannot spin while you blow air.
- Use short bursts of compressed air into the exhaust vent, not long blasts, with the can upright so no liquid comes out.
- For a machine three years or older, opening the bottom panel and cleaning the heatsink directly is far more effective — if you are not comfortable doing it, any repair shop will do it inexpensively.
Step 5: what is normal, and when to stop and act
Some heat is entirely normal. A laptop exporting video or running a game is supposed to be hot and loud; that is the cooling system doing its job. The question is whether the temperature is normal for what you are asking of it.
- Idle or light browsing: roughly 40–60°C, fan quiet or off. Anything above that while idle points at a background process.
- Heavy work, gaming or video export: 75–90°C with an audible fan is normal on most laptops and not damaging.
- Sustained 95°C or more, or shutdowns without warning, means the cooling is no longer coping. Stop and clean it, or have it serviced.
- A fan that makes a grinding or rattling noise rather than a rushing one is failing mechanically and should be replaced before it stops entirely.
Questions people still ask
What temperature is too hot for a laptop?
Sustained operation above about 95°C under load is where you should act, and modern chips will throttle or shut down before damage occurs. Brief peaks near that during an export or a game are normal. What matters more is the idle temperature: above 70°C doing nothing means something is wrong.
Do cooling pads actually work?
Modestly. A pad that lifts the laptop and improves airflow underneath helps by a few degrees, and the lift alone accounts for much of that. It is not a substitute for cleaning a clogged heatsink or for finding the process that is pinning the processor.
Is it bad to use a laptop while it is charging?
No. It will run warmer because the battery generates heat while charging and the machine draws more power, but this is designed behaviour. If your laptop only overheats while charging and gaming at the same time, that is a cooling limitation, not a fault.
Why is my laptop hot but the fan is not spinning?
Either the fan has failed, or a fan-control setting has it on a very passive curve, or the machine is fanless by design and relies on the chassis to shed heat. If it is a model with a fan and you cannot hear it at high load, stop using it under load until you have checked — that is how boards get damaged.
Does undervolting help with overheating?
It can be effective, cutting temperatures noticeably with little performance loss. It also requires care, is disabled on many recent machines for security reasons, and an unstable setting causes crashes. Capping the maximum processor state gives you most of the benefit with none of the risk.
