There is a specific moment when people decide their laptop is old: it takes ninety seconds to become usable in the morning, and a browser with a dozen tabs starts to stutter. That feeling is almost always software, and almost always reversible.

The hardware in a five-year-old laptop is still fast enough for browsing, documents, video calls and light editing. What changed is the number of programs that quietly decided they should start with the machine, plus a disk that has filled up to the point where the system cannot breathe.

None of the steps below requires reinstalling anything or losing files. Work through them in order and expect the biggest gains from the first two.

You are in the right place if

  • It takes more than a minute from the power button to a usable desktop
  • The fan spins up when all you have open is a browser
  • Switching between windows lags by a second or two
  • It was fine last year and nothing obvious has changed

The 60-second fix

  1. Restart properly — not close the lid, an actual restart. Uptime of several weeks is a common cause on its own.
  2. Open Task Manager or Activity Monitor, sort by memory, and close whatever sits at the top that you are not using.
  3. Disable every startup program you did not deliberately want.
  4. Check your free disk space. Under 10% free and everything slows down regardless of the hardware.

Step 1: startup programs are the single biggest cause of a slow boot

Every installer likes to add itself to startup: chat apps, cloud sync clients, printer utilities, update checkers, the software that came with your headset. Individually each is small. Fifteen of them launching at once is what turns a thirty-second boot into two minutes.

Worse, many keep running afterwards, holding memory and checking for updates all day. Disabling a startup entry does not uninstall the program — you can still open it whenever you want.

  1. Windows: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup apps tab. Sort by Startup impact and disable everything marked High that is not essential.
  2. Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items. Remove entries under 'Open at Login' and switch off the background extensions you do not recognise.
  3. Keep: your antivirus, your touchpad or graphics driver utility, and your password manager if you rely on it.
  4. Disable: chat apps, game launchers, cloud storage you do not use daily, printer and scanner helpers, and anything named 'Update Assistant'.

Step 2: a nearly full disk slows down the whole machine

This is the one that surprises people. Both Windows and macOS use free disk space as working room — for virtual memory, for temporary files, for the SSD's own housekeeping. When that room disappears, the system starts swapping constantly and everything crawls.

The practical threshold is 10% free. Below that you will feel it; below 5% the machine becomes genuinely painful regardless of how good the processor is.

  1. Windows: Settings → System → Storage, turn on Storage Sense, then use 'Cleanup recommendations' to clear temporary files and the old Windows installation folder if it is still there.
  2. Mac: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage, and work through the recommendations, especially 'Review Files'.
  3. Empty the recycle bin or trash — deleted files there still occupy the disk.
  4. Find the real hogs: on Windows, WizTree; on Mac, the Storage → Documents → Large Files view. Old downloads, virtual machine images and video projects are the usual answer.

Step 3: the browser is probably using more memory than everything else combined

On a normal working laptop, the browser is the heaviest application by a wide margin. Each tab is a separate process, and a video call, a music tab and a document editor together can hold several gigabytes.

Extensions compound it. Every extension runs on every page, and the ones that promise to save you money by scanning pages are among the worst offenders for memory and privacy alike.

  1. Open your browser's own task manager (Chrome and Edge: Shift+Esc) and look at what is using the most memory.
  2. Remove extensions you did not install on purpose, and any you have not used this month.
  3. Turn on memory saver or sleeping tabs in your browser settings so background tabs release their memory.
  4. If you keep dozens of tabs open as a to-do list, use bookmarks or a reading list instead — the browser was never designed to be that.

Step 4: find the one process that is eating the machine

Sometimes the slowness is not spread out at all — it is a single process consuming most of the processor. Search indexing after a big update, an antivirus scan, a cloud client re-uploading a folder, or a stuck update service.

The difference between temporary and permanent matters here. A search index rebuild after an operating system update is normal and settles within a day or two. A process at 40% CPU for a week is a problem to solve.

  1. Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Processes, click the CPU column to sort. Watch for thirty seconds rather than judging one instant.
  2. Mac: open Activity Monitor from Spotlight and do the same on the CPU tab.
  3. Search the exact process name before ending it — some of the biggest consumers are legitimate system components.
  4. If it is an antivirus or backup tool, schedule its scans for a time when you are not working instead of disabling it.

Step 5: updates, and the one upgrade genuinely worth paying for

Keeping the system and graphics drivers current is unglamorous and does matter, particularly for stutter during video calls and screen sharing. Most laptops with a mysterious lag in exactly those situations are running a graphics driver from two years ago.

If you have done everything above and the machine is still slow, there is exactly one hardware upgrade worth considering on an older laptop, and it is not the processor.

  • If the laptop still has a mechanical hard drive, replacing it with an SSD is transformative — a five-year-old machine will feel new. Nothing else comes close.
  • If it has 4GB of RAM, going to 8GB or 16GB removes most of the stutter when several applications are open, provided the memory is not soldered.
  • Update the graphics driver from the manufacturer's site rather than through the general update tool.
  • Install pending system updates and then restart. A machine that has deferred updates for months is often waiting on a restart to finish half a dozen of them.

Questions people still ask

How often should I restart my laptop?

Once every few days is plenty for most people. Closing the lid suspends rather than restarts, so memory leaks, pending updates and stuck processes accumulate. If your machine has been up for three weeks, restart before you troubleshoot anything else.

Do PC cleaner and optimiser apps work?

The useful things they do — clearing temporary files, managing startup entries — are all built into Windows and macOS already. Many bundle advertising or subscriptions, and registry cleaners in particular can break working software. The built-in tools are safer and just as effective.

How much RAM do I actually need?

8GB is workable for browsing, documents and video calls. 16GB is the comfortable point for anyone who keeps many tabs open alongside other applications, and it is what to aim for if you are buying. Below 8GB, adding memory is usually the cheapest meaningful upgrade.

Is it worth replacing the hard drive with an SSD on an old laptop?

If the machine still has a spinning hard drive, this is the single best value upgrade in computing. Boot times typically go from over a minute to under fifteen seconds, and applications open instantly. It often costs less than a tenth of a new laptop.

Does having many files on the desktop slow down the computer?

A handful makes no difference. Several hundred does have a measurable effect, because both systems render preview thumbnails for desktop items and keep re-checking them. If your desktop is a wall of icons, moving them into one folder is a genuine, if small, improvement.

My laptop only got slow after a big system update. Is that normal?

For a few days, yes — the system re-indexes files and re-optimises applications in the background. If it is still slow after a week, check for a graphics or storage driver that has not been updated for the new version, which is the most common cause of lasting slowdown after an upgrade.
