The detail that gives this problem away is the timing. If the TV drops at roughly the same hour every evening, it is almost never a broken TV. It is interference or congestion arriving on schedule — neighbours coming home and switching on their own networks, a device that wakes up on a timer, or a router doing its nightly housekeeping.

The second clue is that phones in the same room stay connected. Phones have better antennas, and more importantly they can hop between bands when one gets crowded. A TV usually cannot, so it sits on whichever channel it picked when you first set it up and suffers whatever arrives there.

Below is the order that solves this fastest, from the free thirty-second checks to the change that ends it permanently.

  • Streaming apps buffer while your phone in the same room works fine
  • It reconnects if you restart the TV, then drops again an hour later

The 60-second fix

  1. Unplug the TV from the wall for sixty seconds — not standby, fully unplugged — then plug it back in.
  2. Forget the network on the TV and reconnect, retyping the password rather than accepting the saved one.
  3. If your router broadcasts one merged network name, connect the TV to the 2.4GHz band specifically.
  4. Restart the router last, after the TV, so the TV requests a fresh address from it.

Step 1: a real power cycle, which is not the same as standby

Pressing the power button on a modern TV does not turn it off. It goes into standby with the network stack still running, which means a wedged Wi-Fi chip stays wedged through as many standby cycles as you like.

Unplugging it from the wall clears the network chip, releases the old address, and resolves a surprising share of cases that people have lived with for months.

  1. Unplug the TV at the wall socket and leave it for a full sixty seconds.
  2. While you wait, unplug the router as well.
  3. Plug the router back in first and give it two full minutes to come up.
  4. Then plug the TV in and let it reconnect on its own.

Step 2: put the TV on 2.4GHz, not 5GHz

This is counterintuitive, because 5GHz is faster. But 5GHz is also far worse at passing through walls and furniture, and a TV is usually further from the router than a phone, mounted against a wall, often with the router's signal arriving through a cupboard or a kitchen.

Streaming does not need speed. A 4K stream uses roughly 15–25 Mbps, and even a poor 2.4GHz link delivers that comfortably. What streaming needs is a connection that does not disappear, and 2.4GHz reaches further.

  1. If your router shows two networks, for example 'Home' and 'Home_5G', connect the TV to the plain one without 5G in the name.
  2. If your router merges both into one name, log into the router and either split them temporarily or use band steering settings to pin the TV to 2.4GHz.
  3. After connecting, check the signal indicator in the TV's network settings. Two bars or fewer means the next section is your real fix.
  4. Test by playing something for twenty minutes at the hour it usually fails.

Step 3: the evening interference nobody looks for

2.4GHz is shared with microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, some Bluetooth devices and every neighbour within range. That is why the failure clusters in the evening: that is when everyone is home, cooking and streaming at once.

Routers are supposed to pick a clear channel automatically. Many pick one at startup and never reconsider, so a channel that was empty at installation can be badly crowded a year later.

  1. Install a Wi-Fi analyser app on an Android phone, or use your router's own channel scan, and look at which channels are busiest.
  2. On 2.4GHz, use only channel 1, 6 or 11 — every other channel overlaps two of those and makes things worse for everyone.
  3. Set your router to whichever of those three is least used, manually, rather than leaving it on auto.
  4. Move the microwave test: if the TV drops while someone uses the microwave, that alone confirms 2.4GHz interference and pushes you toward the cable option below.

Step 4: the address conflict that looks like a Wi-Fi problem

Routers hand out addresses with a lease — typically a day. When a lease expires, the device renews it. If a TV renews badly, or two devices end up with the same address, the symptom is a connection that works and then abruptly stops, often at the same time each day because that is when the lease expires.

Giving the TV a fixed address removes the renewal entirely. This sounds technical and takes about three minutes.

  1. Find the TV's MAC address in its network settings (a string like A4:2B:8C:...).
  2. Log into your router, usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, with the password printed on its label.
  3. Find DHCP reservation, address reservation or static lease, and assign the TV a fixed address outside the automatic range.
  4. Restart the TV and confirm it picks up the reserved address.

Step 5: the fix that actually ends it

If you have worked through the above and the TV still drops, stop fighting the radio. A wired connection removes every variable in this article at once — interference, distance, band steering, channel congestion, walls.

Most people assume this means drilling. It usually does not. Two options cover nearly every home.

  • A flat Ethernet cable, 10 or 15 metres, runs along a skirting board and under a door without any drilling and costs very little.
  • A pair of powerline adapters sends the network over your electrical wiring: one plugs in by the router, one by the TV. On the same circuit they are reliable and need no configuration.
  • A mesh Wi-Fi node placed near the TV works too, and several models have an Ethernet port so you can cable the TV to the node.
  • Whatever you use, once the TV is wired, disable Wi-Fi in its network settings so it cannot silently fall back to the wireless connection.

Why does my TV lose Wi-Fi but my phone does not?

Phones have better antennas and can switch bands when one becomes congested. A TV is typically mounted flat against a wall, further from the router, and stays on whichever band and channel it first connected to. Same room, very different reception.

Should a smart TV use 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

2.4GHz in most homes, because range and stability matter more than speed for streaming — even 4K needs only around 25 Mbps. Choose 5GHz only if the TV is close to the router and your 2.4GHz band is crowded with neighbouring networks.
