
A router that drops the connection is frustrating precisely because restarting it works. That makes it easy to live with for months, and it hides which of four very different faults you actually have: a problem on the line coming into the house, a router that is overheating, a router whose power supply is failing, or software that needs updating.
The good news is that each of these leaves a distinct fingerprint, and you can identify which one you have without any equipment. The key is to observe two or three drops carefully rather than reacting to each one.
Start with the question that halves the problem immediately.

The 60-second fix
- Note whether Wi-Fi devices drop while a device connected by cable stays online. That single observation splits the problem in half.
- Feel the top of the router. If it is hot to the touch, move it somewhere open and see whether the drops stop.
- Check the router's own log — most have one, and it usually names the cause.
- Try a different power adapter if you have a compatible one; failing power supplies cause exactly this pattern.
Step 1: is the Wi-Fi dropping, or the internet?
These look identical on a phone and are completely different faults. If the Wi-Fi is dropping, devices lose the network name but the router is fine. If the internet is dropping, devices stay connected to Wi-Fi perfectly while nothing loads.
The test is to have one device connected by Ethernet cable and watch what happens to it during a drop.
- Plug a laptop or desktop into the router with a cable and leave it there for a few days.
- Next time everything drops, check that wired device. If it also loses the internet, the problem is the line or the router's connection to it.
- If the wired device stays online while Wi-Fi devices drop, the problem is the router's wireless side.
- Watch the lights on the router during a drop and note which one changes. The internet or DSL light going red or flashing points at the line.
Step 2: heat and the power supply, the two most underrated causes
Routers run permanently and are usually put somewhere with no ventilation — a cupboard, a shelf under the TV, behind a stack of books. They throttle and eventually crash when they get too hot, and the pattern this creates is unmistakable: more drops in the evening, more in summer, fewer if you leave the cupboard door open.
The power supply is the other quiet killer. The small plug-in adapter degrades over years of constant use, and as it weakens the router resets under load — which is why drops often happen exactly when several devices start using the connection at once.
- Put a hand on the router after a few hours of use. Warm is normal; genuinely hot is not.
- Move it into the open, off any other electronics, with space around all sides, and see whether the frequency of drops changes over a week.
- Look at the adapter's label for the output rating (for example 12V 2A) and compare it with a spare if you have one. Using the correct rating matters.
- If drops cluster when the house gets busy, and the router is not hot, suspect the power supply before anything else.
Step 3: read the router's log, which usually names the culprit
Almost every router keeps an event log and almost nobody opens it. It is not always readable, but the useful lines stand out, and they tell you in plain words what happened at the moment of the drop.
Log into the router at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 using the password on its label, and look for System Log, Event Log, or Status → Logs.
- Lines about DSL sync, line retrain or LOS mean the connection into your home is dropping. That is your provider's problem, and the log is your evidence when you call them.
- Lines about DHCP, lease or IP conflict point at address handling inside the house — usually two devices fighting over one address.
- Lines about the wireless interface resetting, or a radio restarting, point at the Wi-Fi side or a firmware bug.
- Repeated reboots with no explanation before them, and an uptime that keeps resetting, is the signature of a failing power supply or failing hardware.
Step 4: firmware and the two settings that cause recurring drops
Routers ship with bugs and receive real fixes. Unlike phones, many never update themselves, so a router bought three years ago may still be running its launch firmware with known stability problems.
Two settings also cause repeating disconnections in normal homes, and both are easy to change.
- Check for a firmware update in the router's admin page, and install it. Do this while nobody needs the internet, and do not interrupt it.
- Raise the DHCP lease time to 24 hours if it is set to something short. Short leases force constant renewals and cause exactly the kind of drop that hits everything at once.
- Turn off band steering temporarily if your router merges 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one network name. Some devices handle the handover badly and drop each time the router tries to move them.
- If you use a mesh system, check that the satellite units have a strong link back to the main unit — a weak backhaul makes the whole network unstable, not just the far room.
Step 5: when it is the line, and how to make the call productive
If a wired device drops at the same moment as everything else and the router's log shows the connection resyncing, the fault is outside your home. Providers are much more responsive when you arrive with specifics rather than 'the internet keeps going'.
Before calling, spend one evening gathering three things. It turns a frustrating conversation into a short one.
- The times of at least three drops, as precisely as you can. Patterns — every evening at eight, every time it rains — are what engineers act on.
- Whether a cabled device also loses connection. This is the detail that stops them blaming your Wi-Fi.
- The relevant lines from the router log showing resync or loss of signal.
- Whether the phone socket has a filter and whether the test worked with the router plugged directly into the master socket — on older connections this is the first thing they will ask.

Why does restarting the router fix it temporarily?
A restart clears memory, drops all sessions and re-establishes the connection to your provider. That clears the symptom of a memory leak, an overheated chip that has had a moment to cool, or a confused connection table — but none of those causes have gone away, which is why it comes back.
How long should a router last?
Five to seven years is typical before heat and component ageing start causing instability. Routers run continuously, are rarely ventilated well, and use inexpensive power supplies, so they age faster than most electronics in the house.
Can a neighbour's Wi-Fi make my router drop?
It cannot make the router itself drop, but severe channel congestion can make your devices lose the connection so consistently that it looks the same. If only wireless devices drop and a wired one stays online, changing the channel is worth trying before anything else.
Does bad weather affect internet connections?
On DSL and cable connections, yes — moisture getting into old joints and street cabinets is a classic cause of drops that follow rain. Fibre is largely unaffected. If your drops correlate with weather, say so when you call your provider; it points straight at the physical line.
Should I replace my provider's router with my own?
Often a good move for range, stability and settings, though some providers require their equipment for phone service or for the connection to authenticate at all. Check before buying, and keep the original in a drawer for support calls.
